This bright, bold cranberry orange relish with fresh ginger is the perfect palate cleanser for your holiday table. It comes together in about 20 minutes and is a game-changer for cranberry sauce skeptics.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 12 oz (340 g) fresh cranberries (1 standard bag)
  • ¾ cup (150 g) granulated sugar
  • ½ cup (120 ml) fresh orange juice (from about 1 large navel orange)
  • 2 tablespoons orange zest
  • 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, grated
  • ¼ cup (60 ml) water
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Rinse the cranberries in a colander and pick out any soft or bruised ones. Zest the orange before juicing it. Grate the ginger after peeling with a spoon.
  2. In a medium saucepan (2-3 quart), combine the cranberries, sugar, orange juice, water, orange zest, grated ginger, and a pinch of salt. Stir to combine.
  3. Bring the mixture to a rolling boil over medium-high heat (3-4 minutes). The cranberries will start to pop and the liquid will turn deep ruby red.
  4. Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer gently for 10-12 minutes, stirring occasionally. The relish is done when it coats the back of a spoon and most cranberries have burst.
  5. Remove from heat and let cool for 1 minute. Taste and adjust sweetness if needed (add more sugar if too tart, more orange juice if too sweet).
  6. Let the relish cool in the pan for 15-20 minutes. It will thicken as it cools.
  7. Transfer to a serving dish or storage container. Serve at room temperature or chilled.

Notes

This relish actually gets better after a day or two in the fridge. Make it ahead for best flavor. For a spiced version, add a cinnamon stick and 2 whole cloves while simmering. For a bourbon version, stir in 2 tablespoons of bourbon after removing from heat. For a maple version, swap half the sugar for pure maple syrup. To freeze, store in a freezer-safe container for up to 6 months.
