These witch finger pretzel rods are a fun, easy, and delicious Halloween treat. Salty pretzel rods are dipped in chocolate, decorated with almond sliver fingernails, and customized with creepy details for a party-perfect snack.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 package (10-12 ounces) pretzel rods
  • 12 ounces melting chocolate or candy melts
  • 1/2 cup white chocolate chips or melting wafers
  • 1/2 cup almond slivers
  • Green gel food coloring (optional)
  • Red decorating gel (optional)
  • Edible googly eyes (optional)
  • Purple or black sanding sugar (optional)
  • Pretzel crumbs or crushed graham crackers (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare your workspace. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper or wax paper. Set up pretzel rods, almond slivers, and decorations within easy reach.
  2. Melt your chocolate. Place melting chocolate or candy melts in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring thoroughly between each interval, until smooth (about 1-2 minutes total). For a lighter skin tone, melt white chocolate separately. For a green tint, add a tiny drop of green gel food coloring to white chocolate.
  3. Test the consistency. The melted chocolate should be smooth and runny enough to coat the pretzel easily but not too thin. If too thick, add a teaspoon of coconut oil or vegetable shortening. If too thin, let cool for a minute while stirring.
  4. Dip the pretzel rods. Hold a pretzel rod by one end and dip the other two-thirds into the melted chocolate, leaving about an inch uncoated for the ‘wrist’ area. Lift and let excess drip back into the bowl, tapping gently if needed.
  5. Create the finger texture. Before the chocolate sets, use a toothpick to create small lines and wrinkles near the ‘knuckle’ area. Make tiny indentations for knuckles.
  6. Add the fingernail. Press an almond sliver onto the tip of the pretzel rod, pointed end extending slightly beyond the chocolate. Gently press to adhere. Repeat for all pretzels before the chocolate sets.
  7. Add decorations (optional). While chocolate is still wet, add edible googly eyes, sprinkle sanding sugar, or press in pretzel crumbs. For ‘blood’ drips, wait until chocolate is partially set, then use red decorating gel to draw thin lines from the ‘cuticle’ area.
  8. Let them set. Place finished pretzels on the lined baking sheet. If adding a contrasting chocolate drizzle, wait until base coating is completely set (about 15 minutes at room temperature or 5 minutes in the fridge), then drizzle with a fork or piping bag.
  9. Repeat with remaining pretzels. Work in batches if needed. Reheat chocolate in 15-second intervals as it thickens.
  10. Final set and serve. Let pretzels set completely at room temperature or in the refrigerator until fully hardened (about 20-30 minutes at room temperature). Transfer to a serving platter.

Notes

For best results, use melting wafers or candy melts instead of regular chocolate chips. Let chocolate cool slightly before dipping to prevent almond slivers from sliding off. For a more realistic look, vary the length of chocolate coating on each pretzel. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days or freeze for up to 2 months.
