A warm, spiced coffee drink with apple butter, oat milk, and a crunchy oat crumble topping that tastes like apple crisp in a mug. Ready in under 10 minutes, it’s the perfect cozy fall morning treat.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup oat milk (preferably barista blend)
  • 1 shot espresso or ½ cup strong brewed coffee
  • 2 tablespoons apple butter
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar (for coffee base)
  • ¼ teaspoon cinnamon (for coffee base)
  • Pinch of nutmeg
  • Tiny pinch of salt
  • 2 tablespoons rolled oats (not instant)
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar (for crumble topping)
  • ½ tablespoon melted butter (or coconut oil for dairy-free)
  • ¼ teaspoon cinnamon (for crumble topping)
  • Whipped cream (optional, for garnish)
  • Thin apple slices (optional, for garnish)
  • Extra drizzle of caramel (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Make the apple crisp crumble topping: In a small skillet over medium heat, combine rolled oats, 1 tablespoon brown sugar, melted butter, and ¼ teaspoon cinnamon. Stir constantly for 2-3 minutes until golden and fragrant. Remove from heat and set aside.
  2. Brew your coffee: Make ½ cup of strong coffee or pull one shot of espresso.
  3. Heat the oat milk: Pour oat milk into a small saucepan over medium heat or into a microwave-safe bowl. Heat until steaming but not boiling (about 2 minutes on stove or 45 seconds in microwave).
  4. Froth the milk: Use a frother to froth warm oat milk until doubled in volume and creamy. Alternatively, pour warm milk into a jar, shake vigorously for 30 seconds, then microwave for another 30 seconds.
  5. Mix the apple coffee base: In your mug, combine apple butter, 1 tablespoon brown sugar, ¼ teaspoon cinnamon, pinch of nutmeg, and tiny pinch of salt. Pour hot coffee over the mixture and stir until dissolved.
  6. Assemble the macchiato: Pour frothed oat milk over the coffee mixture. Do not stir—the layers are part of the experience.
  7. Add the crumble topping: Sprinkle toasted oat crumble generously over the foam. Add a light dusting of cinnamon on top.
  8. Garnish and serve: Add whipped cream, apple slices, or caramel if desired. Serve immediately while hot.

Notes

Toast oats fresh each time for best crunch. Don’t skip the salt—it balances sweetness. Layer coffee base first, then milk, then crumble. For iced version, skip frothing and pour over ice. For gluten-free, use certified gluten-free oats.
