A warm and comforting sangria that combines caramel, apple, and cinnamon whiskey for a cozy fall drink. Perfect for chilly evenings and holiday gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups (960 ml) apple cider
  • 1 cup (240 ml) cinnamon whiskey (e.g., Fireball or Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Fire)
  • 1/2 cup (120 ml) caramel sauce
  • 2 large Honeycrisp apples, cored and sliced
  • 1 large orange, sliced into rounds
  • 34 cinnamon sticks
  • 23 pieces star anise (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons (30 ml) lemon juice
  • Ice cubes (as needed)
  • 1/4 cup (50 g) brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons (28 g) unsalted butter
  • 1/4 cup (60 ml) apple cider (for caramel base)

Instructions

  1. Make the caramel apple base: In a small saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter and brown sugar together, stirring constantly. Once bubbling and smooth, add 1/4 cup apple cider. Stir for about 2 minutes until combined and slightly thickened. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract. Let cool for 5 minutes.
  2. Prepare the fruit: Core the apples and slice into thin rounds or half-moons. Slice the orange into thin rounds. Toss apple slices with lemon juice to prevent browning.
  3. Build the sangria base: In a large pitcher, combine the cooled caramel apple base, remaining apple cider, and cinnamon whiskey. Stir gently until well incorporated.
  4. Add the fruit and spices: Drop in the apple slices, orange rounds, cinnamon sticks, and star anise. Stir gently to distribute.
  5. Chill and meld: Cover the pitcher and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, ideally 4-6 hours.
  6. Serve: Fill glasses with large ice cubes. Pour sangria over ice, ensuring each glass gets some apple slices and an orange round. Garnish with a fresh cinnamon stick if desired.
  7. Optional garnish: Drizzle extra caramel sauce on top, sprinkle with cinnamon, or add a star anise to each glass.

Notes

Do not skip the chilling time; flavors meld best after 4-6 hours. For a non-alcoholic version, swap cinnamon whiskey for cinnamon syrup and apple juice. Remove cinnamon sticks and star anise after 12 hours if storing longer.
