A quick and easy stovetop-inspired green bean casserole that’s creamier, cheesier, and crunchier than the classic. Perfect for weeknights or holidays, this 30-minute recipe uses simple ingredients and a secret trick—mixing crispy fried onions right into the casserole for pockets of crunch in every bite.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 16 ounces frozen green beans (about 4 cups), cut style
  • 1 can (10.5 ounces) cream of mushroom soup
  • 1 ½ cups sharp cheddar cheese, shredded (about 6 ounces)
  • ½ cup whole milk (120 ml)
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper, freshly ground
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 ½ cups crispy fried onions (about 2.5 ounces), divided
  • ¼ cup panko breadcrumbs (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon melted butter (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter or non-stick spray.
  2. Place frozen green beans in a colander and run cool water over them for about 30 seconds to break up clumps. Pat dry with a clean kitchen towel or paper towels.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, combine cream of mushroom soup, milk, soy sauce, garlic powder, and black pepper. Whisk until smooth.
  4. Fold in 1 cup of the shredded cheddar cheese. Reserve the remaining ½ cup for the topping.
  5. Add the prepared green beans and 1 cup of the crispy fried onions to the bowl. Gently fold until green beans are fully coated and fried onions are evenly distributed.
  6. Pour the mixture into the prepared baking dish and spread into an even layer.
  7. Sprinkle the remaining ½ cup of shredded cheddar cheese over the top, then scatter the remaining ½ cup of crispy fried onions. If using panko, mix with melted butter and sprinkle over the fried onions.
  8. Bake for 20-25 minutes, until bubbly around the edges and the top is golden brown and crispy.
  9. Remove from oven and let rest for 5 minutes before serving.
  10. Serve warm.

Notes

For best results, shred cheese from a block instead of using pre-shredded. Pat green beans dry thoroughly to avoid a watery casserole. Let the casserole rest for 5 minutes after baking to allow the sauce to set. To make ahead, assemble without topping, refrigerate up to 24 hours, add topping just before baking, and add 5-10 minutes to baking time.
