cozy hot buttered rum - featured image

A quick and easy hot buttered rum recipe where butter is melted directly in the mug for a cleaner, brighter flavor. Ready in just two minutes, this warming drink is perfect for cozy nights.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 ounces dark rum (about 1/4 cup)
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar, packed
  • 1 whole cinnamon stick
  • 3/4 cup boiling water
  • Optional: fresh nutmeg or star anise for garnish

Instructions

  1. Warm your mug by pouring a splash of hot tap water into it and letting it sit for 30 seconds. Dump the water out.
  2. Place 1 tablespoon of softened unsalted butter and 1 tablespoon of packed brown sugar into the bottom of the warm mug.
  3. Pour 2 ounces (1/4 cup) of dark rum into the mug and stir briefly to combine.
  4. Drop in one whole cinnamon stick.
  5. Slowly pour about 3/4 cup of just-boiled water over the mixture. Stir gently for about 15 seconds until everything is combined and the butter is melted.
  6. Let the drink rest for 30 seconds to allow the cinnamon to infuse.
  7. Taste and adjust sweetness or rum strength if desired.
  8. Garnish with freshly grated nutmeg or a star anise pod if desired. Serve immediately with the cinnamon stick in the mug.

Notes

Use softened butter for best results. Water must be boiling hot to properly melt the butter and dissolve the sugar. Stir vigorously for 15-20 seconds to emulsify the butter. For a non-alcoholic version, omit the rum and add a splash of vanilla extract and extra cinnamon. For a dairy-free version, use vegan butter or coconut oil. This drink is best enjoyed fresh within 15 minutes of making.
