A rich and creamy slow cooker hot chocolate that’s perfect for Halloween parties or cozy nights. This easy recipe uses simple ingredients and the slow cooker does all the work, resulting in a velvety, indulgent drink that kids and adults love.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 can (14 ounces) sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 ½ cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • ¼ cup hot water
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg
  • ⅛ teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
  • Whipped cream (for serving)
  • Chocolate shavings or sprinkles (for serving)
  • Mini marshmallows (for serving)
  • Candy canes or peppermint sticks (for serving)

Instructions

  1. Lightly spray the inside of a 6-quart or larger slow cooker with non-stick cooking spray or rub with butter. Set to low.
  2. In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together cocoa powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cayenne pepper (if using). Add hot water and whisk until a smooth, thick paste forms.
  3. Pour whole milk, heavy cream, and sweetened condensed milk into the slow cooker. Whisk to combine.
  4. Add semi-sweet chocolate chips and the cocoa paste. Whisk until chocolate chips begin to melt and paste is incorporated.
  5. Stir in vanilla extract and whisk again.
  6. Cover and cook on low for 2 hours, stirring every 30 minutes to ensure even melting.
  7. Turn slow cooker to ‘warm’ setting. Ladle into mugs and serve with desired toppings.

Notes

For a dairy-free version, use full-fat oat milk or canned coconut milk and dairy-free chocolate chips. For a vegan option, use vegan sweetened condensed milk. To prevent a skin from forming, keep the lid on and whisk occasionally. Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheated on the stovetop or microwave.
