Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup black olives, drained
  • 3040 dark crackers (e.g., black sesame, charcoal, or dark rye crisps)
  • 8 ounces gouda cheese, sliced
  • 1 cup fresh blackberries
  • 6 ounces salami or pepperoni, sliced
  • 1 cup black grapes
  • 4 ounces dark chocolate (70% cocoa), broken into pieces
  • 68 Halloween skewers (or toothpicks with black olives, cheese cubes, and grapes)
  • 3 tablespoons blackberry jam or fig jam
  • Optional: fresh rosemary sprigs, edible flowers in dark purple, black sesame seeds

Instructions

  1. Prep Your Ingredients (5 minutes): Slice gouda into thin, even pieces (about 1/4 inch thick). Wash and dry blackberries and grapes. Drain olives and pat dry. Break dark chocolate into bite-sized pieces. Set everything aside in small bowls.
  2. Assemble the Halloween Skewers (5 minutes): Thread a black olive, a cube of gouda, a grape, and another olive onto toothpicks or skewers. Optionally add a small piece of folded salami. Make 6-8 skewers and set aside.
  3. Place Your Bowls First (2 minutes): Put small bowls of jam and any loose olives on the board first, in corners or along one edge to create anchor points.
  4. Add the Cheese and Meat (3 minutes): Arrange sliced gouda in a fan pattern or small clusters. Fold salami slices into quarters or roll into cylinders and place near the cheese.
  5. Scatter the Crackers (2 minutes): Place dark crackers in small stacks or overlapping lines around the board, leaving room for other ingredients.
  6. Add the Fruits and Chocolate (2 minutes): Scatter blackberries, grapes, and dark chocolate pieces in empty spaces, distributing evenly.
  7. Insert the Skewers (1 minute): Place Halloween skewers upright in cheese or meat clusters, or lay them across the board at angles so they are visible and easy to grab.
  8. Final Touches (1 minute): Add optional garnishes like rosemary sprigs or a dusting of black sesame seeds. Adjust any unbalanced areas.

Notes

Don’t overcrowd the board; leave about 20% visible. Keep cheese at room temperature for best flavor. Make extra skewers as they disappear quickly. Prep all ingredients before assembling for a smooth process. For best results, assemble the board no more than 30 minutes before serving to keep crackers crunchy.
