A spooky, simple Halloween punch that creates a dramatic dry ice fog effect. Made with pineapple juice, limeade, and lemon-lime soda, this quick witches brew is perfect for parties and guaranteed to impress guests.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 cups pineapple juice
  • 4 cups lemon-lime soda (like Sprite or 7UP)
  • 2 cups limeade concentrate (thawed)
  • 1 cup orange juice
  • 1/2 cup simple syrup (optional)
  • Green food coloring (optional, a few drops)
  • 23 pounds dry ice
  • Gummy worms or spiders (optional, for garnish)
  • Frozen eyeballs (lychee or grapes with a blueberry in the center, optional)
  • Dry ice ‘fingers’ (ice cubes made with plastic gloves, optional)
  • Fresh mint leaves (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the punch base (5 minutes): In a large pitcher or measuring cup, combine the pineapple juice, limeade concentrate, orange juice, and lemon-lime soda. Stir gently so you don’t lose too many bubbles. If you’re using simple syrup or food coloring, add it now. Taste it—it should be sweet with a tangy kick.
  2. Chill everything (optional but recommended): If you have time, refrigerate the punch base for an hour before serving. Cold punch makes the fog last longer because the dry ice doesn’t melt as quickly.
  3. Set up the punch bowl (2 minutes): Place your punch bowl on a sturdy table where people can gather around it. Make sure there’s nothing flammable nearby—dry ice fog is heavier than air and can snuff out candles.
  4. Pour the punch base into the bowl (1 minute): Slowly pour the chilled punch into the bowl, leaving about 2 inches of space at the top. You don’t want it too full because the dry ice will displace some liquid and you need room for the fog to roll out.
  5. Add the dry ice (30 seconds): Using tongs or heavy gloves, carefully place a chunk of dry ice into the punch bowl. Start with a piece about the size of a golf ball. The fog will start rolling out almost immediately. If you want more fog, add another piece. I usually add one piece every 20-30 minutes to keep the effect going throughout the party.
  6. Stir gently (10 seconds): Give the punch a gentle stir with your ladle. This helps release more fog and distributes the cold evenly. Don’t stir too vigorously, or you’ll splash punch everywhere.
  7. Add garnishes (2 minutes): Drop in your gummy worms, frozen eyeballs, or whatever creepy decorations you’ve prepared. They’ll float on top and look like they’re swimming in the fog.
  8. Serve immediately: Ladle the punch into cups, making sure each cup gets a little bit of fog. Warn your guests not to drink the dry ice—it’s not poisonous, but it can burn their mouths if they swallow a piece.

Notes

Never let anyone eat or swallow the dry ice. It can cause internal burns. The punch itself is safe to drink once the dry ice has fully sublimated. Add dry ice right before serving and replenish every 20-30 minutes. Avoid metal punch bowls. Store extra dry ice in a cooler with the lid cracked open. For best fog effect, use a clear glass bowl.
