This bright, zingy cranberry orange sauce with fresh ginger comes together in under 20 minutes with just five simple ingredients. It’s the perfect holiday side dish that pairs beautifully with turkey, ham, or roast chicken.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 12 ounces (340g) fresh or frozen cranberries
  • ¾ cup (150g) granulated sugar
  • ½ cup (120ml) fresh orange juice (from about 1 large navel orange)
  • 1 tablespoon orange zest
  • 1 tablespoon grated fresh ginger (about a 2-inch piece)
  • ½ cup (120ml) water

Instructions

  1. Prepare your ingredients: Wash the orange thoroughly. Zest it using a microplane, being careful to only get the orange part. Juice the orange into a measuring cup until you have ½ cup. Peel the ginger with the edge of a spoon and grate it finely. Measure out your sugar and water.
  2. Combine the liquid ingredients: In a medium saucepan, combine the orange juice, water, and grated fresh ginger. Stir together until the ginger is well-distributed.
  3. Add the sugar and bring to a boil: Pour in the granulated sugar and stir until it dissolves completely. Turn the heat to medium-high and bring the mixture to a rolling boil.
  4. Add the cranberries: Once the liquid is boiling, add all the cranberries at once. Stir gently to coat them with the syrup.
  5. Reduce heat and simmer: Turn the heat down to medium-low so the mixture is at a gentle simmer. Cook for 10-12 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the cranberries have popped and the sauce has thickened.
  6. Watch for the right consistency: Around the 8-minute mark, the sauce will start to thicken. To test, dip a cold spoon into the sauce and run your finger through it. If the line holds, it’s done.
  7. Remove from heat and stir in the orange zest: Take the pot off the stove and stir in the orange zest.
  8. Cool and serve: Let the sauce cool in the pot for about 15 minutes, then transfer to a serving dish or storage container. Serve warm, at room temperature, or cold.

Notes

For the best flavor, make this sauce a day ahead and let it sit in the fridge overnight. The flavors meld together beautifully. If you prefer a smoother sauce, use an immersion blender at the end for a few seconds. If the sauce becomes too thick, stir in a tablespoon of water at a time until it loosens up.
