These witch finger pretzel rods are a quick and easy Halloween treat that combines salty pretzels, sweet green coating, and almond fingernails for a delightfully creepy snack that’s perfect for parties and guaranteed to get laughs.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 24 standard-sized pretzel rods (Snyder’s of Hanover brand recommended)
  • 12 ounces (340g) green candy melting wafers (Wilton brand recommended, or white chocolate chips with green food coloring)
  • 24 whole sliced almonds (slightly curved ones look more realistic)
  • 12 drops red food coloring (gel kind preferred)
  • 1 teaspoon (5ml) vegetable oil (or coconut oil, for thinning coating if needed)
  • Parchment paper (for lining baking sheet)

Instructions

  1. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside. Ensure enough space in fridge or freezer to fit the sheet flat.
  2. Sort pretzel rods and pick out 24 of the straightest, most unbroken ones. Set aside on a clean work surface.
  3. Melt green candy wafers in a microwave-safe bowl. Heat in 30-second intervals at 50% power, stirring between each interval, until completely smooth (about 2 minutes total). If too thick, add 1 teaspoon vegetable oil and stir.
  4. Dip each pretzel rod into the melted coating, covering about two-thirds of the rod. Let excess drip off back into the bowl.
  5. Place dipped pretzel on parchment-lined baking sheet. Immediately press one sliced almond onto the tip at a slight angle, with the pointed end extending slightly past the pretzel tip to form a fingernail.
  6. Repeat with remaining pretzels, working quickly before coating sets. If coating thickens, microwave for 15 seconds.
  7. While coating is still wet, use a toothpick to gently draw 2-3 horizontal lines across the coated portion of each pretzel to create knuckle lines.
  8. Refrigerate for 10 minutes to set the coating completely until firm and no longer sticky.
  9. Once coating is set, mix a tiny drop of red food coloring with a drop of water. Use a toothpick or small paintbrush to dab a small amount at the base of the almond fingernail and let it drip slightly for a ‘blood’ effect.
  10. Let come to room temperature (about 5 minutes) before serving. The coating will soften slightly, making them easier to bite into.

Notes

Don’t overheat candy melts or they’ll seize up. If that happens, add a teaspoon of coconut oil and stir vigorously. Position almonds before coating sets. Work in small batches (12 pretzels at a time) to keep coating at right consistency. For best results, use slightly curved almond slices for more realistic fingernails. Store in airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days; do not refrigerate long-term. Can be frozen for up to 3 months.
