This creamy, spiced Puerto Rican coconut drink is the perfect holiday treat. Made with simple ingredients and a secret simmering step, it’s rich, flavorful, and guaranteed to be a crowd-pleaser.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 can (15 oz) cream of coconut (like Coco López or Goya)
  • 1 can (13.5 oz) unsweetened coconut milk
  • 1 can (12 oz) evaporated milk
  • 1 can (14 oz) sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 cup white rum (like Bacardi or Don Q)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cinnamon stick (plus extra for garnish)
  • 4 whole cloves
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan, combine the unsweetened coconut milk, cinnamon stick, and whole cloves. Bring to a gentle simmer over medium heat (do not boil). Simmer for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat and let cool for 5 minutes.
  2. Pour the coconut milk through a fine-mesh strainer into a bowl or directly into your blender. Discard the cinnamon stick and cloves.
  3. To the blender with the strained coconut milk, add the cream of coconut, evaporated milk, sweetened condensed milk, rum, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, and a pinch of salt. Blend on low speed for 30 seconds, then increase to medium-high and blend for another 30 seconds until smooth and well combined.
  4. Taste and adjust: add more rum or sweetened condensed milk if desired.
  5. Pour the coquito into bottles or jars using a funnel. Seal tightly and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, preferably overnight.
  6. Shake the bottle well before serving. Serve cold in small glasses. Garnish with a cinnamon stick or a sprinkle of ground cinnamon.

Notes

For best flavor, make a day ahead. Shake well before serving as coconut cream can settle. Do not freeze. Store in refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.
