These easy red velvet heart-shaped crinkle cookies are a quick and delicious treat made with a box of cake mix. Perfect for Valentine’s Day or any last-minute occasion, they feature a fudgy center, crackly powdered sugar coating, and an adorable heart shape that makes them look like you spent hours.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 box (15.25 oz) red velvet cake mix
  • 1/3 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar (plus extra for rolling)
  • 1–2 tablespoons milk (optional, if dough is too dry)
  • 1/4 cup white chocolate chips (optional)
  • Red sanding sugar (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line two baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone mats.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the red velvet cake mix, vegetable oil, eggs, and vanilla extract. Stir until well combined. The dough will be thick and slightly sticky. If it feels too dry, add milk one tablespoon at a time until it comes together.
  3. If using white chocolate chips, fold them in gently until evenly distributed.
  4. Pour the powdered sugar into a small bowl. If lumpy, sift it first.
  5. Scoop out tablespoon-sized portions of dough and roll them into balls. Lightly oil your hands if the dough is sticky.
  6. Roll each dough ball in the powdered sugar until completely coated. Roll twice for extra coverage.
  7. Gently press each sugar-coated ball into a heart shape using your fingers: press the top to create two bumps and the bottom to a point.
  8. Place the shaped cookies on the prepared baking sheets, spacing them about 2 inches apart.
  9. Bake for 10-12 minutes, until the edges are set and the tops look cracked and crinkly. The centers should still look slightly soft.
  10. Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to a cooling rack to cool completely.
  11. Repeat with remaining dough, letting baking sheets cool completely between batches.

Notes

For more defined heart shapes, chill the shaped cookies for 15-20 minutes before baking. Don’t overbake; cookies go from perfect to overdone quickly. These cookies taste even better the next day as flavors meld.
